How to test a sump pump

A sump pump can sit idle for months and then be asked to run for hours during the first big thaw or storm. That is the worst moment to find out the float is stuck. Testing takes five minutes and a bucket of water.

Short answer

Every three months, and always before the spring thaw or storm season, slowly pour a bucket of water into the sump pit until the float rises. The pump should switch on, empty the pit quickly and switch off by itself. Then go outside and check that the discharge pipe is clear, not frozen, and sends water well away from the house. Why regular testing matters

Most sump pump failures are simple: a float jammed against the side of the pit, a tripped outlet, a pipe frozen outside, a motor that seized from sitting still. None of these shows until water starts rising, and by then it’s pouring in. Five minutes of testing finds all of them.

Step by step

  1. Look at the power. The pump should be plugged into a working outlet, ideally one used for nothing else. Many pumps use a “piggyback” plug, with the float switch plugged into the wall and the pump plugged into the back of it; both need to be in. If the outlet is a GFCI and has tripped, reset it and find out why.
  2. Clear the pit. Remove debris, gravel or anything that could jam the float or block the intake screen.
  3. Pour water in slowly from a bucket, around 5 gallons (20 litres), until the float rises.
  4. Watch the pump start. It should switch on without delay, empty the pit to the low mark within a few seconds to a minute, and switch off on its own.
  5. Listen. A steady hum is normal. Grinding, rattling or screeching means worn bearings or debris in the impeller.
  6. Check the check valve. When the pump stops, water in the pipe shouldn’t pour back into the pit. A little is normal; a lot means the check valve is failing and the pump will run more than it needs to.
  7. Go outside to the discharge. The pipe should be clear of leaves, snow, ice and soil, and the water should end up well away from the foundation and flow downhill. Otherwise it soaks back through the ground into the same pit.

Don’t forget the backup

A pump runs on electricity, and storms knock out power exactly when pits fill fastest. A battery backup pump takes over when mains power fails. Test it following its manual, usually with a test button or by unplugging the main pump, and check the battery’s age: many need replacing every few years. Some homes on city water use a water-powered backup instead, which needs no battery. That’s a job for a plumber to install.

Signs the pump is on its way out

Replacing a tired pump before it fails is far cheaper than cleaning up after it. Plumbers can also check whether the pump is the right size for how much water your pit collects.

Less water in the pit starts at the roof
